Audition Guidelines for Prospective Dance Majors

Picture
Please see the following information provided to assist students auditioning for the dance academy:

Students must come dressed in dance attire (leotard, tights, shorts) or other comfortable clothing, such as leggings and a plain fitted shirt.

Jeans, or baggy, restricting or revealing clothing is not acceptable.

Ballet or jazz shoes are preferred and recommended; however, students without dance shoes may dance in bare feet or socks.

Students will learn and complete ballet barre and center exercises, modern exercises, as well as contemporary choreography.

Students will learn choreography in a large group setting first, and then will be broken into smaller groups to perform.

Both the choreography and the audition will take place on audition day.

There will be a brief interview session for the students at the end of the audition.

NOTE: We highly recommend that students wear dance shoes to the audition, as dancing in socks poses a risk of slipping on the dance floor. Students that are accepted into the Dance program are not allowed to wear socks in dance class.

Dance Audition Tips:

1. Wear the proper dance attire and shoes.

2. Begin warming up on your own immediately after check-in.

3. Be attentive, focused, and always listen for instructions.

4. Get familiar with ballet terms and what they mean, like plie, tendu, jete, etc.

5. Perform and dance like no one's watching!

6. Be polite and thank your instructors and/or judges.

7. Remember that you are being watched the entire time, even before and after you dance!
